PERFORMING
ARTS

As advocates for arts in schools, we continue to prioritize the arts disciplines in our communities. Our students participate in curriculum-based theatre, dance, and vocal leading up to at least three culminating performances during the year.

Students can look forward to producing three full productions during the school year which will include theatre, vocal, and dance. Our approach is subject-based and outcome-based. Parents can see the growth of their children in each arts discipline with every subsequent production. Productions are culturally responsive celebrating the individuality of all of our students. Students will be in full hair, make-up, and costume during productions as part of the real-world experience.

Theatre making provides multiples avenues for active learning. Through the interpretation of dramatic literature and the creation of their own works, students engage as writers, actors, designers, directors, and technicians. Students learn to use their minds, bodies, voices, emotions, and sense of artistry to examine the world and its meaning.

Exploring, creating, replicating and observing dance will build students’ technical and expressive skills, develop their artistry and a unique personal voice in dance and experience the power of dance to communicate. They will understand dance as a universal language and a legacy of expression in every culture. Students develop a working knowledge of dance language and aesthetics, and apply it to analyzing, evaluating, documenting, creating, and performing dance. By investigating historical, social, and cultural contexts, and exploring common themes and principals connecting dance to other disciplines, students enrich their creative work and understand the significance of dance in the evolution of human thought and expression.

Students are naturally sensitive to musical sounds that communicate feelings, emotions, and images. They’ll have opportunities to imitate, explore, and express themselves through activities that engage every aspect of their physical, sensory, and imaginative beings. Through music, students will develop physical, social, cognitive, aesthetic, and metacognitive skills. Achievement Lab has historically produced an annual spring musical that allows students to showcase the skill sets they’ve retained over the course of the school year.
